The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community is being discriminated against by the State itself according to the Labour Party LGBT section, which accredits PL leader Joseph Muscat as raising awareness.

Government is responsible for protecting LGBT rights because "All humans are born equal and free in dignity and rights" - LGBT Labour

The Labour Party Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) section said that LGBT rights are human rights but "in many supposedly democratic countries, including Malta, equality for homosexual individuals, couples and families are yet to become a reality".

LGBT Labour said that after the PL leader Joseph Muscat initiated public discussion against homophobia and for recognition of same sex couples three years ago, all political parties began addressing the issue.

"It is a pity that discourse used by the National Party is vague and subsequent actions demonstrate that there is no clear commitment in favour of rights for same sex couples," LGBT Labour said.

The proposed cohabitation legislation by the government would be treating the LGBT community as though it were second class, according to the Labour LGBT section.

"Equality demands that all persons, irrespective of sexual orientation, should be granted the same rights, opportunities and duties all other persons in society are granted. All humans are born equal and free in dignity and rights," LGBT Labour said.

LGBT Labour condemned the government and parliament's inertia in protecting minority rights which is resulting in discrimination against LGBT persons by the State itself: "All humans have rights and rights should be protected by the State."

"In the coming months, LGBT Labour expects to see the continuation and end of the discussion on equal rights for all citizens and the enactment of laws guaranteeing these rights and protecting victims of discrimination," LGBT Labour said.
